Abstract:The less well-managed banks are likely to be the casualties of the trend towards mergers and acquisitions. Enjoying unprecedented freedom in 1996, a number of South Korean banks emerged as winners, but many others are struggling to survive. This trend is likely to continue as accelerated financial deregulation in South Korea will help better-managed banks to stand out. But the ill-managed banks will have to go under as they can no longer expect the government's protection. And the finance and economy ministry is revising laws to encourage bank mergers and acquisitions.
