Abstract:The last few months have been a nightmare for Korea and its outgoing president Kim Young Sam. The fundamental structures that have built Korea into the world's 11th largest economy in less than 40 years appear to be drastically in need of reform and recent events highlight the urgency of change. Last year was bad for the Korean economy. The typical 9% GDP growth achieved in 1995 was cut sharply to only 6.9% while the current account deficit ballooned out to $23.7 billion.
