Abstract:The Cable Communications Act of 1984 deregulated the cable industry. In the 1980s penetrations surpassed 50% in the urban areas. Cable presents a major challenge to the broadcasting industry with its constant development of new programming and increase in channel selection. However, cable faces competition from telephone companies entering the cable market, and from a recent agreement between Sky TV, Hearst Communications, NBC and Cable Visions Systems Corp. to bring DBS to the U.S.
