Abstract:One of the earliest areas of market reform in the Baltic republics - even before regaining their independence in August 1991 - was in the banking sector. Beginning with Soviet financial reforms in 1988, the three countries saw the creation of central banks and the first commercial institutions. Since independence, the Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian banking industries have advanced in different directions.
