Abstract: | Business is buoyant in the aftermath of the Barings disaster as firms help clients get internal controls right, but accountants' responsibilities could increase. Immediately after the crisis smaller merchant banks lost funds. Now that the dust is setting, long-term effects are apparent. Some of the largest corporations are rumored to be instructing their treasuries to switch deposits from merchant banks that do not have substantial backing from a wealthy parent institution. |
