Abstract:For many years, the barcode has functioned as the retailer's prime - and often only - means of identifying products. Its adoption, first for national and then for international product identification, was something of a triumph. First, it is one of the very few technologies which has moved steadily and sensibly towards cross-border, cross-company acceptance. There are still differences btw. the codes used in various parts of the world and some sector differences, but there have been none of the bitter battles which have bedevilled most standardisation processes.
