Abstract:The author tells the story: "When I graduated from Harvard College as an ostensibly smart guy, I discovered that I did not know how to make change. This was brought to my attention when I got a job selling cigars and pipes in a tobacconist's shop. I understood subtraction and addition okay... in the abstract. But when confronted with a cash register and a testy, foot-tapping customer, sapience fled. My boss did not fire me; he pitied me. The Angel of Duh passed over, and I lived to make change another day..."
