Abstract:This paper examines how organizations engage in continuous change by studying multiple-product innovation in the computer industry. Firm comparison shows that successful multiple-product innovation blends limited structure around responsibilities and priorities with extensive communication and design freedom to create improvisation within projects. This combination is not too structured or unstructured. Successful companies rely on low-cost probes into the future incl. experimental products and strategic alliances, and they link the present and future together through time-paced transition processes. To chrystallize the key properties of these firms the ideas of sequenced steps, links in time, and semistructures were developed.
