Abstract: | Countries with relatively low income (per-capita) have emerged as new competitors in the automobile industry, even though the industry draws on highly skilled labour and advanced technologies. Thus, the German automobile industry has become subject to globalization-induced adjustment pressures. Outsourcing of input supplies has resulted in over-proportionate growth of imported autoparts. At the same time, German producers in the field are investing abroad. Subsequent research ought to focus on the role of structural change within the automobile industry for achieving income gains and also generating employment through specialization according to comparative advantage. |
