Abstract:Nowhere has the impact of the Internet been more noticeable than in the financial services sector. Analysts believe that it's a given that the rapid pace of technology adoption will lead to an around-the-clock global financial market that connects investors across time zones and continents. This paper considers the situation with Merrill Lynch, which is one of the world's largest full-services brokerage firms. In 1999 Merrill Lynch launches institutional e-commerce division. A year and a half after this launch Merrill's institutional clients have direct electronic access to some of today's most sophisticated e- commerce applications.
