Abstract:This paper considers the problem of the fledging digital cinema, or "e-cinema". E-cinema has the potential to transform largely analog movie houses into digital playpens. There is no shortage of energy being aimed at dragging the modern movie theater into the digital age. Digital cinema will not become reality until the studios get behind it. And that will require two difficult feats: getting the studios to finance a massive investment in equipment and getting them to agree on technology standards. Cost is the biggest problem. One of the big stumbling blocks has been the fact that Hollywood studios have been unwilling to take the risk on digital conversion. Theaters will have to bear a big burden, too. The biggest impetus for e-cinema is coming from start-ups Madstone Films and In Theater Entertainment.
