Abstract:The paper includes an expanded discussion of the issue that brings together research, theory, and educational practice of significance to these students. Specifically, the author attempts to succinctly address (a) educationally related conceptual/theoretical contributions that lay the foundation for educational action that responds to the culturally and linguistically diverse context in the authors' schools; (b) the special linguistic circumstances of relevance to culturally and linguistically diverse students: issues of dialect, bilingualism, and second- language acquisition; (c) the educational debate and response to these student populations generally, and more specifically in classrooms; and (d) new linguistic and cultural issues that have emerged around culture and language in the US context.
