Abstract: | The theories of Norbert Elias are used to explain the unplanned and structured changes in expected standards of living over time. This figurational approach is compared to to other explanations. It is argued that consumption standards are produced and transformed through changing dependencies and power relations between social classes. It is contended that discourses of living standards and luxury are important aspects of the growing identification and empathy between classes, which encourages greater global integration. |
