Abstract:The Atari Corporation's leading role in home video players in the seventies. In 1983 Atari's sales dropped by 30%. Eight strategies for managing decline is amply illustrated. The key points are: be even-handed in implementing layoff policies; allow employees to leave with dignity; help those displaced find new jobs: avoid blaming people who have been laid off: be cautious when hiring outside executives; keep employees informed; set realistic expectations; use ceremonies to reduce anger and confusion. The most important lesson learned that adaption, not layoffs,is what arrests decline. Atary story illustrates that examining failure is as important as examining success.
