Abstract:The author has studied the long-term structural changes, especially the rapidly growing service sector. The general public has been led to believe that the above development would provide a salvation to U.K. and wipe out the persistent unemployment. The author believes, and his research indicates a somewhat optimistic scenario. In this article he shows just what the service sector does to the unemployment position. He draws conclusions from the retail trade as an example to illuminate the changing skills needed for work during the rest of the decade.
