| Abstract: | Despite the great number of studies examining relations between corporations and their strategic business units (SBUs), the impact that SBU-level strategic context might have on these relations has been overlooked. The utility of various states is focused on. Openness in relations and subjectivity in performance assessment are found to have positive effect on SBUs' effectiveness when building market share or pursuing differentiation but negative when SBUs are trying to maximize short term earnings or to keep costs low. The result suggests that corporate-SBU decentralization should always be preferred regardless of SBUs' strategic context. |
