Abstract:Although one can find numerous bits and pieces of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) applications, large complex computer-integrated manufacturing operations are still relatively rare. The potential benefits and limitations of CAM along with its requirements and economic effects are examined. Potential applications of design databases are reviewed. The most important CAM development strategies are described and analyzed. Some economic and managerial effects of CAM applications are discussed. Potentials and requirements of "third level" applications are summarized. The problems of transferring various levels o computerization to other domestic and international plants are indicated.
