Abstract:The state of analysis in the strategy formulation area is overviewed and commented. Three strategic management models are briefly reviewed: the model of the Boston Consulting Group, the Miles model, and the Campbell and Goold model. Using some features of these models a new model for strategic decision-making in the multi-divisional firm is developed. It has the simplicity of the BCG matrix, yet it assesses the strategic relationship between center and business unit rather than the center's handling of product lines. It adopts a model of analysis similar to that of Miles et al., yet without being restricted to decision-making at the level of the firm. It draws upon the management styles of Campbell and Goold, yet more descriptively.
