| Abstract: | The agency theory contribution to organizational theory is reviewed. Its empirical validity is assessed. Some topics and contexts which are fruitful for organizational researchers are identified. The conclusions are that agency theory 1. offers unique insight into information systems and information as a purchasable commodity, outcome uncertainty, incentives, and risk, and 2. is an empirically valid perspective, particularly when coupled with complementary perspectives. The principal recommendation is to incorporate principal-agent research in studies of the many problems having a cooperative structure. A summary of agency theory studies is provided. |
