Abstract:Three theoretical models were developed, described and evaluated, to identify bases for differentiating significant from nonsignificiant organizational research outcomes. The first model focuses on characteristics of the final products of research, the antecedents model is concerned with the beginnings of projects, the ambidextrous model deals with activities that fit between the two other models. Individuals completed two interview-questionnaire forms, one each for a significant and a not-so-significiant project they had undertaken. Significance is defined by ten attributes, including citations by others, nominations for or winning of awards, favorable response by colleagues. The ambidextrous model appears to provide the best approach.
