Abstract:The "psychological model" of organizational commitment has been widely investigated with respect to USA workers, but less frequently applied in cross-cultural studies. Results from a survey of 7,000 Japanese and USA production workers indicated that the Japanese respondents expressed lower levels of organizational commitment than USA respondents. This finding, in part, reflects both the size and diversity of samples. The results do not support the argument that organization structure (e.g. centralization), context or personnel practices have significant effects on commitment. Instead, perceptions of job characteristics are more directly related to work attitudes. Some implications are considered and a new heuristic is shown.
