Abstract:The shortcomings, in terms of predictive ability, of the conventional mathematical programming formulations are illustrated through a numerical example. Then two new estimation models are proposed that eliminate some of the weaknesses of the conventional models. One of the proposed models assumes that the to-be-estimated attribute weights are step functions of attribute values. The other main feature is the recognition of the fact that attribute weights and attribute values may not be so easily separable from one another as assumed by the conventional models. In such cases, the task becomes to find partial and overall utilities directly.
