Abstract:Applications of microelectronics are analyzed in terms of product strategy, competence, and training in Great Britain and West Germany. The links between quantitative and qualitative factors are shown at different levels of analysis. It is suggested that variations in product strategies may provide a plausible explanation of different competence needs of companies, and that strategic differences between national samples may help to explain differences in the emphasis on particular skills and skill mixes. It is also supposed that the introduction of microelectronics into products helps to aggravate differences between North and South, high-tech and traditional sectors, graduates and blue-collar workers, and hardware and software.
