Abstract:The ability of economic size and level of socioeconomic development to predict the size of an export market is investigated. Data on 102 manufactured products, 82 nations, and 3 different years are employed. The findings suggest that the two variables are good predictors of export market potential for some types of products, but not for others. These results lead to the development of a taxonomy of manufactured products with implications for both the theory and practice of export marketing. These findings can assist managers in the selection of the best indicators of market size for their particular products. Arguments are presented that it is time to conduct more research to explain the workings of the international marketplace.
