Abstract: | A research program, in which the multiple paradigm model of Burrell and Morgan is used to conduct an empirical analysis of work behaviour in the British Fire Service is outlined. The methodology of multiple paradigm research is described. This framework is used for producing four accounts of work behaviour in the organization under study. Details of these accounts - functionalist, interpretive, radical humanist and radical structuralist - are presented, and the findings are compared. The results yield alternative "images of organization". Despite the methodological problems of multiple paradigm research, if operationalized successfully, it may be able to realize epistemological and language variety in studies of organization. |
