| Abstract: | This paper has analyzed the effect of social capital and measures of economic well-being on citizen preferences for parliamentary government versus authoritarian government in the former Communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Using the survey data from the NDB III survey, the authors tested the effects of seven measures of social capital and four indicators of economic well-being, plus other control variables on whether NDB citizens (1) prefer a strong leader over parliament or (2) favor suspending parliament and eliminating political parties. |
