Abstract: | Business-to-business marketplaces are supposed to be the future of B2B e-commerce. In this paper the author answers the question for how long they are supposed to be the future of B2B e-commerce. Consolidation in many vertical market sectors looks unavoidable. The metals industry spawned one of the earliest e-marketplaces, and now boasts more than 100. The author states that in the longer term we should not expect this or any other vertical market to be able to support more than a handful of e-marketplaces. Eventually, the B2B marketplace could become yet one more area of the the new economy where those with the deepest pockets do best: bricks-and-mortar may be the best business builders after all. |
