Abstract:The downswing in Euroland continues. In the summer of 2001, the expansion of real GDP has almost come to a halt, and unemployment has remained unchanged. The downturn is partly due to the weakening of exports after the boom in the world economy came to a sudden end. In addition, domestic demand in the euro area has lost momentum. Last year's increase of crude oil prices continues to have a negative effect; furthermore, the price level jumped as a consequence of the animal diseases in the spring of 2001. Finally, key interest rates were raised in the previous year. All these negative shocks from the demand side and from the supply side dampened economic activity in the current year. The only positive impact came from the tax cuts (original in German).
