| Abstract: | This paper covers the following subjects: The Turkish economy; Equity markets and Turkish banking. Speaking of a Turkish economy the paper states that at the end of 1999, Turkey embarked upon an ambitious stabilization programme aimed at achieving single digit inflation by 2002. Central to programme were monetary and exchange rate policies set to provide a nominal anchor for reducing inflationary expectations. The paper states that the interest burden Turkey faces is clearly not easy to shoulder. However a breakdown of the debt structure reveals that debt can still be rolled if confidence in the markets can be restored. The paper also says that Turkish banking sector is at the beginning of tough road. |
