Abstract: | Over the last three decades discussion of the changing nature of the global economy could not neglect consideration of the growth of the Asia Pacific region. The interaction of export-oriented growth, increased foreign trade and East Asian movement into new and labour-intensive technologies and industries produced a rate of economic expansion which eclipsed that of the rest of the world. Many believed that the authors were witnessing new global trends. The 1997 crisis has spawned a more critical approach to the East Asian miracle and put into perspective, if not undermined, some previous accounts purporting to explain the high rates of growth. |
