Abstract: | Film-makers have had to cope with dwindling subsidies and ticket sales, piracy and fierce competition from American films. They are showing they can survive, and compete, but will need to resist protectionist temptations. Central Europe's motion picture industry isn't dead. But in the battle for the market share, American movies are winning hands down. When the iron curtain fell, it dropped with a loud thud on the heads of Central European film-makers. Suddenly, their governments had little money to pump into films. |
