Abstract: | Hungary's seemingly chronic economic malaise should not obscure its very real progress in restructuring. Some things are going right. Just look at Hungary's 1995 economic growth forecast, say the doom-mongers: less than 2% compared with Poland's roaring 6% plus. Is Hungary's situation as bad as it looks? The short answer is a qualified no. Although on the one hand, the country's overall financial situation remains extremely precarious, Hungary's success in attracting foreign direct investment is pushing forward restructuring inside Hungarian companies and financial institutions far beyond the level of other Visegrad countries. |
