Abstract:Could a communist victory in the June elections derail Russia's incipient economic recovery? On the night of President Gennady Zyuganov's inauguration, a brief ceremony is held in the Kremlin. This is the nightmare scenario for anyone with a stake in Russia's four-year-old programme of free-market reforms. The fears, however, are probably overplayed. For one thing, Mr.Yeltsin is at his best when the heat is on, and his re-election campaign is gathering strength. Even if Mr. Zyuganov wins this summer, there is reason to think his party would be moderated in office.
