Abstract:Despite its progress in creating market economies and opening up to trade and investment, Central Europe has not yet done enough to ensure high long-term growth. For all the talk of an Asian-style boom in Central Europe led by homegrown "tiger" economies like Poland or the Czech Republic, deep down most people realise this is wishful thinking. Some optimism is certainly justified. Last year the region saw its strongest expansion since the fall of communism. Poland, Slovakia and Romania are by 7% ahead.
