Abstract:Are the biggest Central European companies necessarily the best? BCE asked top managers, bankers and analysts in the region to select their country's best companies and banks - and compared the results with Deloitte & Touche's Top 100 ranking of the region's largest companies. The problem is that the biggest are unlikely to be the best. That is the danger of such lists the world over. But in Central Europe, despite improvements in accounting standards and the gradual shift away from giant state-owned monopolies towards firms capable of competing in a market economy, the difference between big and good is still much greater than normal.
