Abstract:The region's stock markets are tiny, but that doesn't make them irrelevant. They're an essential tool for commercialising Central European companies. And there are already signs of this happening. Poland has a well-regulated liquid stock market that rose by 65% in dollar terms last year - and the economy is stumbling. There's a link somewhere. But given the region's tiny stock markets, it seems ridiculous to claim that soaring stock markets lead to a booming economy. So why do people like Cherian Samuel of the World Bank say that "well-functioning capital markets help growth"?
