Abstract:The article explores the history of the CD-ROM book industry from the development of the technology through the early growth stage. The technology has enabled publishers to store material on compact disc. Special attention is given to niche markets first targeted by publishers and the problems faced in trying to penetrate the vast market for consumer books. Macro repercussions of the introduction of the technology are highlighted. The article also discusses research issues in the writing of recent histories in short. It also draws implications and conclusions for marketing.
