Abstract: | Poland's new government wants to make up for lost time when it comes to financial reform. It has scheduled the sale of a 35% chunk of Pekao, the country's largest bank, to strategic investors, and engineered a management purge at insurance giant PZU. The sackings, starting with PZU's head, the former deputy finance minister Jan Monkievicz, might have a whiff of political revenge. But they mark a return of commercial sence. That might explain why Mr Monkiewicz was philosophical when he was given the elbow in December. |
