Abstract:Consumers are estimated to have spent £1,805 mn on books in 1997. Books have fared better than newspapers and magazines in recent years. The vast number of titles available is a major characteristics of the market. Around 100,1000 new books and editions are published annually. The main types of book bought by consumers are fiction and general non-fiction. Fiction is led by mass market paperbacks, general non-fiction is led by hobby-related books.
