Abstract:Russian companies are still stuck in the Soviet era, without Soviet-era investment. But restructuring is desperately needed if Russia is to do more than survive off natural resources. In an old joke, a traveller asking the way is told: "Well, I wouldn't start from here". One could be forgiven for thinking the same about Russian corporate reform. Russia has consistently failed to tackle industrial restructuring, or to create an environment in which few firms could thrive.
