| Abstract: | This paper investigates the empirical relationship btw. journal prices, their quality measured by their citation counts,..., as well as the publishers' conduct. Based on database covering 22 scientific fields and more than 2.600 of among the most highly cited journals in 2003, it is shown that i. for-profit journals charge roughly 3 times more than journals run by scientific societies, ii. the number of citations has a positive impact on prices, iii. there are large differences in prices across fields varying by a factor from 1 to 6 which are highly and positively correlated with the degree of industry concentration. |
