Abstract:This editorial bases on the article by Bill Starbuck that argued that the history of the behavioral and social sciences contains endless sequences of conceptual and methodological fads (Starbuck, B. (2009). The constant causes of never-ending faddishness in the behavioral and social sciences. Scandinavian Journal of Management, 25(1), 108-116) and a short commentary by Danny Miller who noted that academics live in a publish-or-perish world, not a be-relevant-or-perish world (Miller, D. (2009. The social ecology of research fads. A commentary on Starbuck's 'The constant causes of never-ending faddishness in the behavioral and social sciences'. Scandinavian Journal of Management, 25(1), 117-118). In the view of this editorial faddishness offers a fresh perspective to the current debate on changing academic work. It is argued that faddishness is at the very core of what academics (are expected) to do. The editorial also is an introduction to the topic.
