Abstract:The paper proposes a particular frame of reference for rethinking 1989,s dramatic developments in Central and Eastern Europe. The twin problems of equality and of effective State management turn out to be the issues on which classical social theories have centered and around which they were worked out. The author suggests that regardless of the eventual outcomes of these revolutions, it is important that they be closely monitored, carefully documented, and systematically analyzed by sociologists, for there will certainly be significant temporal and regional differences in the ways and degree to which the drive to institute liberty will succeed and fail.
