Abstract: | The shape of the 20th century -- the American Century -- could already be seen. The years after the Civil War had been an age of entrepreneurs, who constructed and exploited transportation and communication networks that linked every place to every other. Carnegie, Fisk, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt -- these men got unimaginably rich unbelievably quickly, at least by the standards of the time. Yet their era ended with the century. Organization Man rose to challenge the robber baron. |
