Abstract:There are two fundamental approaches that can be taken in considering whether economic science has a subject matter of proper breadth. It can be considered the science that deals with marketplace efficiency, or it can be viewed as a social scene, which deals with human policy goals considered generally. Amartya Sen terms these the engineering and ethics traditions, respectively. Both are traceable to Aristotle (1980).
