Abstract:The article tells that Franklin anticipated by more than 200 years what we now call the theory of "cognitive dissonance" - the idea that our attitudes often follow from our behavior rather than precede it. Second, it illustrates the "ethical pragmatism" noted at some length. A deepened appreciation of the roots of American business culture lies in store for those who would search the many accounts of what was said and what happened at the Cosntitutional Convention in 1787 and in the first administration of George Washington.
