Abstract:A typology of leadership in firms is established. It is argued that two dimensions have to be crossed to produce a grid of leadership typologies. The one is cultural: it is rooted in sociology and history. The other is socioeconomic. It helps to distinguish among firms according to their nature, according to the means of recruitment and promotion of their leaders. The role of technocratic hierarchies within big industrial and financial groups are examined. Some of the great American managers and French managerial dynasties are mentioned.
