Abstract:The role of concept formation in organizational science is highlighted. It is shown how concepts are defined and implemented. The phenomena of concept travelling and concept stretching are examined. A distinction between theoretical and empirical concepts is made. A clear treatment of various conceptual abstraction levels is provided, describing how to climb or descend the ladder of abstraction while forming concepts. The negation approach is articulated, and it is shown how to attain the abstraction levels via the use of this approach to concept formation. The proposed method may be a point of departure for minimizing concept misformation in organizational research.
