Abstract: | The two significant trends today have little in common but share the characteristics that they reflect integrating forces that are breaking down older distinctions. The first is the reversal of the longstanding fragmentation of the social sciences that took economics out of the realm of moral philosophy and gave it the uniqueness that it has enjoyed for nearly two centuries. The other trend reflects the growing integration of the world economy as trade, investment, portfolio capital flows and people move increasingly across national borders, creating a veritable "spider's web" defining the modern world economy. These trends are considered in turn. |
