Abstract: | An attempt to revise the existing theory of modernization of societies hitherto trying to follow the path of development of Western countries is made. Parson's concepts and theoretical perspective is used to put forward an Asian model of development, of which Japan (apart from a few historical peculiarities) could be the archetype. A valuable criticism of culturalist interpretation of the popular "Japanese model" is provided. A return to history is essential in order to highlight the dynamics which is a specific quality of this country and to understand why cultural characteristics are now reinterpreted and incorporated into a new rationality. |
